If I hire a car in the UK, do I need to buy extra insurance? Any other hidden charges?

I am thinking of hiring a car with a budget rental firm such as Thrifty. If I do so, do I need to buy any extra insurance? Someone told me that these hire firms only provide you with very basic insurance, so that if you were to have an accident and it was your fault, you wouldn’t be covered….. is this true?

Also, I’ve had a look on their website, and they seem to charge £28 a day for car hire. This seems quite cheap - are there any other hidden costs to be aware of?
What is the best way to hire a car in Baja, Mexico?
Thursday, March 5th, 2009Charles Jamieson asked:
I am travelling to Mexico in June and would like to hire a car in Tijuana and travel down the Baja peninsula, dropping the car off in Cabo San Lucas (or thereabouts) before catching the ferry across to mainland Mexico. The only quotes I can find online include a drop-off fee (for returning the car to a different depot to the one at which I picked it up) of about $600–basically doubling the cost of car hire. Is there any way around this?

i don’t want to wait half an hour to be carted 2 kilometres down the road in a transit van, to the ACTUAL car hire company!!
i have to say that i **** it when people reply, saying “i don’t know the answer to your question”. the big drawback of YA’s points system is that people can abuse it like this.

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009What is the best car hire company for us to use in America?

My friend and I are both 21 and are looking to road trip in America this summer (mid-June to early July) and we need to hire a car. Our journey takes us through Nevada, California and Arizona. We are travelling for 22 days. It is only us and we both intend to drive the hired car. Being aged 21-24 we are often subject to an additional charge per day. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Can anyone recommend a company which would be the cheapest for our situation?
